And then, the grand finale: climb up to the panoramic viewpoint of Hovsåsen, for a hikers’ light lunch with a view over Vik.

The programme

Wear sneakers: we’re off for a hike over the fjord. As you approach Hovsåsen hill, fire up your muscles and discover what Norwegians call friluftsliv, passion for open-air living.
Ready, set, go. The green of the valley is just waiting for walkers, with the land gently rising and falling. While your feet walk, your gaze turns to the wild peaks. And the adrenalin carries you along.
There are two big historic stops: the wooden Hopperstad Stave church, built by Vikings, and Hove church, made entirely of stone.
Then you pass beside the Moahaugane burial mounds: ancient graves for the nobility of 200–400 AD. Listen to the guide’s stories, but hold on to your breath: now comes the best part!
The final climb takes you to the highest point of Hovsåsen, where you can stop to enjoy your achievement while you picnic with a view over the village of Vik and the whole of the Sognefjord.
